served as Town Hall, Fire Dept. and Library. The basement was used as
the town jail.

2. 511 Main Street
- Scott Valley Drug Store
Built in 1880 by
Parker, Campbell & Co. as a mercantile. In 1896 the business became
known as the Denny Bar & Parker Co. The upper floor of this building
was used as the first classroom of the Etna High School. The building has also
provided space at various times for the post office, telegraph and
express offices.

- JOHN GRANT HOME
Built in 1904 Architecturally
interesting because of its hipped roof and gable with return eaves.Grant
and his brother William had
various gold mining interests at Sawyers Bar and owned a variety of businesses throughout
the valley.

- C.W. NUTTING HOME
Built in 1883 Home of one of the pioneer
doctors of Siskiyou County. Now operated as
an apartment building, this home displays a barge-board on its gable end
and has hooded windows.

- R.H. CAMPBELL HOME.
Built prior to 1880 and
added on to in 1906 by A.H.Denny. Denny was
Campbell’s partner in the Denny Bar and Campbell Co. as well as having
Quartz Valley mining interests.

- DR. E.W. BATHURST HOME
Built prior to 1860 by Judge
J.S. Beard and enlarged in 1898 by Dr Bathurst. The home features a cupola, a
leaded glass transom
and side lights.

Main Street - FRENCH HOME
Built in 1875. Mr. French was the
first elementary school teacher and was
instrumental in forming the Congregational Church. This house and the
one next door (to the south) were identical when built.

- BEREAN CHURCH
Built in 1881 Originally dedicated as
the First
Congregational Church of Etna. The Sunday School wing was
added in 1910. This is the oldest church in Etna.

- DARLIN ELLER HOME
Built in 1895. Originally a modest one
story dwelling that has grown upward and outward over the
decades.

- ELZA ELLER HOME
Built 1877. Mr. Eller carried mail
over the Salmon Mountains, served as Postmaster and later owned the Hardware
Store. Currently
operated as a bed and breakfast.

- DR. H.C. ELLER HOME
Build circa 1877. Dr. Eller, a dentist in
Etna for 54 years, built one
of the most beautiful homes in Etna. The house features a
turret, bell-cast shingles, shiplap, stick-work and a decorative pattern
above the east porch.

12. 835 Bryan Street
- TETHEROW HOUSE
The house is
constructed entirely of redwood shipped from the coast by mule. Mr. Tetherow
used only the very
finest lumber and it is said he wood.

13. College and Howell
Streets - ABE BAR HOME
Built during 1899-1900
by Abe Bar who was a local merchant and partner with Mr. Denny and Mr.
Parker. The home was remodeled and added on to in the 1950’s.

- JAMES FACEY HOME
Built in 1898 by James
Facey, a carpenter, for his wife as a wedding gift. Notice the fish
scale shingling and fret work all around the house.

- JAMES FACEY HOME
Built in 1899 by James Facey after his new
bride rejected the first house because it didn’t have a downstairs
bedroom. This house was known as the Gingerbread House because of the
extensive exterior carvings.

- WM. BALFREY HOME
Built in 1905 by the pharmacist for his
bride-tobe (who was possibly the first woman to graduate from Stanford
University, and was Siskiyou County’s
first Superintendent of Schools). This was the
first house in Etna to have an indoor water closet and was featured in Sunset
Magazine
in 1915.

Street - I.O.O.F. HALL
Built in 1881, the
lower floor of the Odd Fellows Hall has been used as a public dance
hall, a school (when the school
building burned in 1910) and a post office.

- FORMER ROOMING HOUSE
Built circa 1897. The building contained 10
stoves, five on each
floor, but only one bathtub, one toilet and no wash basins at all.

Street - BUSINESS DISTRICT
Built circa 1877 with structures of brick,
stone and wood. The stone building between the Barber Shop and Off To
The Movies, dates from about 1871. Although earlier buildings existed,
they were destroyed in three fires.

- KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS HALL
Built circa 1929 on the
site of the Rough and Ready Flour Mill, the business that gave Etna its
start in 1853. This building was the first home of the Etna Free Library
and now houses the City Hall.

Built in 1867 at a cost
of $3,044. One of the Lodge’s outstanding members was Dr. Nutting, who
served as Grand Master of
California in 1904.

- GEORGE WAGNER HOME
Built in 1898. The
Wagner family was one of the early settlers in the valley. Mr. Wagner
opened a saloon in Rough and Ready.

in 1896. The owner Ludwig Holzhouser operated the Union Lumber Mill.

- MARTIN PITTMAN HOME
Built around 1853. Mr. Pittman combined two
small houses to make a
larger home for his family. He owned the marble mill and also purchased
the old saw mill grant which included some of the northern part of town.
