Etna, California was chosen in Outside
Magazine August 2004 as one of the ETNA TODAYDue to the decline in logging activities during the 1980s, many of Etna’s younger residents were forced to move elsewhere seeking employment. Real estate prices declined, and although farms and ranches in the valley continued to thrive Etna along with the rest of Scott Valley became economically depressed. The scenic beauty of the area along with reasonable real estate prices has begun to lure retirees into the valley (a trend which continues today). The local economy began a slow upward climb. While many people regard Etna as “the middle of nowhere” it is actually only on the edge of nowhere. The town has become a convenient jumping off spot for forays into the Marble Mountain, Russian and Trinity Alps Wilderness Areas. Numerous hiking and pack trails are nearby. Proximity to the Pacific Crest trail makes Etna a popular stop with hikers wishing to pick up mail, shower, and do laundry, etc. Many take advantage of the local restaurants, the award-winning brewery, and lodging before continuing on their trek. Whitewater sports on the nearby class IV & V Salmon and Scott Rivers is popular in the Spring as is hunting in the Fall for that elusive buck. There are many fishing holes in the area in which to wet a line. Motorcycle riders and bicyclists enjoy riding the scenic, little traveled routes through the mountains. With its grocery, drug, hardware and sporting goods stores, post office, lodging and restaurants, Etna has become a support town for all of these outdoor activities. The small town atmosphere along with excellent schools and low crime rate make Etna a wonderful place to live and raise a family.
